The Burke Mountain Young Naturalists Club uses our centre in winter months when the weather is not cooperative for an outing. Our facility lends itself well to learning sessions such as this. Club members learned about Winter Birds from artist/educator Gay Mitchell and her assistants, daughter Christina and fellow Burke Mountain Naturalist Deanna McArthur. Club members learned how to identify the birds they are likely to see in the fall/winter season by their song, and try to make bird calls themselves. They looked at the physical characteristics of local birds, like size, shape, colour, and the details which help us tell them apart. There was a discussion about food and habitat for birds who do not migrate during the colder time of the year. The young naturalists later made a small non-bake clay sculpture inspired by a winter bird.
